These beautiful houseplants are named for their color, being primarily violet. They are not named for their genealogy. They are not from the family of violets. Instead, they are from the family of Gesneriaceae. They are, however, native to Africa – Tanzania and Kenya.

For information about care of your African Violet, visit the Wikipedia. “The flowers are 2–3 cm in diameter, with a five-lobed velvety corolla (“petals”), and grow in clusters of 3–10 or more on slender stalks called peduncles. Wild species can have violet, purple, pale blue, or white flowers.”
